The Patient Centered Outcomes Research (PCORI) fee helps fund research that provides insight on things such as health outcomes, clinical effectiveness and more. This filing and fee payment is the responsibility of the plan sponsor.
Aetna has heard your feedback and is excited to share changes to how they will support Aetna Funding Advantage (AFA) clients with the required information to submit their PCORI filing.
In June 2025, Aetna will be providing clients with a membership report, and the membership data on this report can be used as you client completes and files IRS Form 720. The federal deadline for reporting is July 31, 2025.
Important Information
- The report provided to the client will include the monthly membership count for 2024 and only includes employees covered under the Aetna Funding Advantage (AFA) plan
- Membership is calculated using the Snapshot Count Method, which counts the total number of covered lives on a single day in each of the calendar months a group had active medical membership with Aetna
- If the client was only covered by Aetna for a portion of 2024, the membership report will only include those months of coverage
- Aetna is providing the PCORI Calculator to assist in determining the fee to be paid
- The report does not reflect membership administered by any other third parties, it is specific to enrollment on Aetna Funding Advantage (AFA) plans
- Aetna relies on information provided by the broker, plan sponsor and/or member when creating this report; This includes membership enrollment dates and demographic information
Reminder
Aetna is providing this membership report to clients as a service. It is the client’s responsibility to review and validate this information to ensure they provide an accurate PCORI filing to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Aetna is not responsible for the PCORI filing or the information contained therein.
Please allow until July 1st for your clients to have received their forms as Aetna is not able to provide copies prior to this date.
